Why do I need reactive film protection coatings for my boat?

Reactive film is not a wax or polish. Please don’t confuse it with wax or any of the other inferior and potentially damaging silicone-based polish products that flood the market today as it was designed to be different……

Our Reactive film is a clear, optically neutral deep gloss colour intensifying coating that is thicker and longer lasting than any other polish or "shine" product in the world today.

The permanent coating prevents the large scale oxidation of paint & gel coat which results in dull looking surfaces and rapidly fading colour intensity, as well as 100% protection from harmful UV, acid rain and industrial pollutants.

When degradation of gel coat occurs, the traditional method is to cut and polish the surface. This abrasive action removes the oxidised film by cutting away the actual surface structure, leaving the remaining surface with a reduced layer of pigment and a “polished” resin. While the surface may look clean and shiny at the time, this restoration is only temporary as the surface soon chalks over, becoming once again dull and lifeless as oxidation and environmental attack take their toll.

Cut x Polish = Repaint

ImageIf a faded area of gel coat is left untreated, the oxidised film forms a protective skin over the surface which retards further UV attack. Unfortunately, the visual appearance is so unattractive that the tendency is to clean and polish to brighten up the finish. Eventually this constant abrading reduces the finish to such a porous state that further “polishing” has no effect. A complete replacement of the coloured surface now becomes essential, which is an expensive and unnecessary way to maintain a boat.

Conventional wax and polishes are soft and non-durable, and are easily dissolved by your regular wash routine. When applied to your boat, surfaces exposed to the sun quickly heat up and begin breaking down the wax, literally melting it to a molten state.

Dust, industrial fallout, exhaust fumes or any other airborne pollutants are now easily absorbed into the hot sticky wax surface. The undesirable end result is that the wax traps dirt and pollutants next to the surface.

Wax – “The Sand Paper” effect

ImageA downward spiral of degradation now begins: the next time you wash or wax your boat this trapped contamination acts like sandpaper on the gel coat and delicate painted surfaces, further abrading them.

These results in spider-web style scratches easily visible in sunlight, and increased porosity, in turn making washing and maintenance harder, thus forcing you into using harder, more abrasive products and washing actions and the vicious cycle continues.

The smart long term solution is to let Permagard Marine manage this problem using the latest reactive film coating technology developed specifically for high-value marine craft like yours.
